I feel this challenge shows just another draw back from the world of technology. While we cannot turn our backs on the plentiful benefits of computers, the internet, we must be willing to recognize some of the things that we lose, things that frequently go unnoticed. The internet allows us to have such a high level of specificity in the things we use while engaged in the cyber network. Who we talk to, what we view, what we play, it can all be filtered to be limited to little if anything or anyone. Although at times this proves to be very convenient and stress free, at the same time we blind ourselves from the world. We blind ourselves from diversity, from change, from culture, from differences. By doing this we force ourselves to close off and hinder ourselves from exploring all the things the world really has to offer. This week as I emersed myself in the midst of our latest challenge I found out some interesting things about people and maybe even some interesting things about myself. Although we have become a society so enveloped in money, success, possessions, and a materialistic attitude there exists proof that we are not the heartless robots we seem so intent in becoming. On thursday night I took a trip down to Gallery Plaza metro station to watch the Capitals play the New York Rnagers at the Verizon Center. Along the way I managed to talk to a couple of people while riding on the metro. I met one individual who was actually a med student at Georgetown. Being a neurophys major myself we struck up a conversation about science the whole medical school. It was really good for me to hear from someone who has actually dealt with the whole process. Another individual I met we struck a conversation with because we derived from there red clothes and capital bearing jerseys. They were from Rockville and had season tickets to the game. Seemed like some generally nice people. I felt that it was a really good experience to engage into random conversations with random people. It made me take another look at realize that I need to to make sure I don't close myself off. That I need to remember to stay open to new things new pepole and not be afraid to maybe leave my comfort zone, to enter unfamiliar territory.
For this challenge, I’d like you to have a conversation with 5 strangers and blog about your exchanges. You can take this as a chance to talk to people you might not normally speak with.
In your online life, you can set your settings so that your interactions are controlled by you–people you know and topics you’re interested in. Your social network can stay very insular.
What happens when you interact with people you don’t know?
